Synopsis

Award-winning director Hirokazu Kore-eda (OUR LITTLE SISTER, LIKE FATHER LIKE SON, NOBODY KNOWS) returns with a powerful tale of family ties broken and remade, starring the brilliant Hiroshi Abe (THERMAE ROMAE, CAPE NOSTALGIA). Ryota (Abe) is a struggling novelist working as a private detective by day. Though he had early career success as a prize winning author, he now wastes all of his money on gambling and barely writes.

After the passing of his Father, Ryota attempts to reconnect with his aging mother (Kirin Kiki, AN), as well as his 11-year-old son Shingo, and his ex-wife Kyoko (Yoko Maki, LIKE FATHER LIKE SON). In the midst of these fumbling and unsuccessful attempts, a summer typhoon brings the whole family together on a fateful night that may offer an opportunity for them to bond once again.

Kore-eda once again shows his skillful mastery of the family drama, with this honest portrayal of love and acceptance in the face of failure and shortcomings. While Hiroshi Abe truly shines as Ryota, a dramatic departure from his more heroic roles. AFTER THE STORM is not to be missed at HIFF 2016!
