40-something Makoto Tanaka (Tadanobu Asano, JOURNEY TO THE SHORE, LAST LIFE IN THE UNIVERSE, ICHI THE KILLER) has 3 daughters. One from a previous marriage and two step-daughters that he has raised with his second wife. While life can be a bit complicated Makoto seems to manage juggling all of his responsibilities. But when his wife announces she is pregnant with another child, it throws their delicate balance into disarray, creating chaos within both families.
Adapted from a Naoki Prize winning novel, and directed by Yukiko Mishima (NIGHT’S TIGHTROPE), DEAR ETRANGER explores issues surrounding the growing number of ‘mixed-marriage’ families in Japan, in what is still a very patriarchal society. Featuring a stand-out dramatic performance by Tadanobu Asano, as well as Rena Tanaka (DESPERATE SUNFLOWERS) and Shinobu Terajima (also in this year’s OH LUCY!) in supporting roles, this film is a touching meditation on love and marriage and what it truly means to be ‘family’.
