E Ho‘omau!: The Menehune and the birds E Ho‘omau is the imperative form of the Hawaiian verb meaning to persevere, to persist. E Ho‘omau urges us to learn from the past and to perpetuate the good. To the Hawaiians of old, their stories were the most important creations; a primeval source and rationale of their ideals and values that played a dynamic role in the past and influenced their thoughts and values. The metaphoric symbolism underlying these stories serves as a context to understand the history, practices, and related values of traditional and modern Hawaiians. It is said that the Menehune (little people) were the first inhabitants of the Hawaiian island chain. Most stories of the Menehune take place on the island of Kaua'i. The Menehune were hard workers and could build large, complicated things very quickly. They built heiau and the walls of fish ponds, and they were also caretakers of the forest. This story takes place deep within Wainiha valley on the island of Kaua‘i. Kehau, a young Menehune boy, and his best friend, a little elepaio bird, discover that a group of men has been killing the birds of the Kaua'i rainforest in order to harvest their feathers faster. Kehau and Elepaio seek out the Menehune Chief and his warriors to help save their friends and find a way to change the habits of these men or risk losing the beautiful birds forever.
