While cleaning out the house of his recently deceased great aunt Taki, Takeshi (Satoshi Tsumabuki) discovers her recently completed autobiography. As he reads the handwritten pages, he recounts his days spent with his aunt as she unfolded her life story on paper. Flashing back to pre-war Japan, THE LITTLE HOUSE tells the tale of the young Taki (Haru Kuroki) and her time spent as a housemaid for the well-to-do Hirai family in Tokyo.

Masaki Hirai is both head of the house and head of department at a toy factory. Yet whilst he has visions of his company expanding in the early 1940s, his wife Tokiko falls in love with his young colleague, art school graduate Shoji. Taki remains loyal to Tokiko and devotedly takes care of the family. However, growing increasingly aware of the furtive love affair that is developing, her devotion is ultimately tested...

A nostalgic, beautiful family drama directed by master filmmaker Yoji Yamada, THE LITTLE HOUSE is a story of love, loss and life in a country on the brink of war.
