Adapted by Andrew Adamson from the best-selling novel by Lloyd Jones, MR. PIP is the story of how Mr. Watts, a teacher on the war-torn island of Bougainville, helps a young girl survive the violence of her daily life through the power of imagination. Mr Watts reads from his favourite book, “Great Expectations,” and 14-year-old Matilda is transported into the Victorian world, finding inspiration, friendship and hope when her real life is filled with harsh uncertainty and danger.
MR. PIP is set in Bougainville during the 1990s when the country was torn apart by a war over copper mining and land rights, and most of the story it tells is very close to the experiences of the people there.
As part of the New American Filmmakers program designed to highlight the contributions of immigrants to American cinema, HIFF will be hosting a special extended conversation with MR. PIP director Andrew Adamson directly following the first screening of the film. This master class discussion hosted by HIFF Programming Director Anderson Le will focus on the director's extensive career, culminating in his latest feature MR. PIP.
HIFF is also honored to have acclaimed film composer Harry Gregson-Williams in attendance as a featured participant in the New American Filmmakers program. Gregson-Williams will be participating in a special film composer's panel, SOUND X VISION: MUSIC IN FILM on Saturday October 12th, as part of HIFF's Creative Lab program. MR. PIP represents his latest collaboration with Andrew Adamson.
