1968 -- The year that changed the world. There was free love, soft drugs, hard drugs and the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Bobby Kennedy. And Vietnam.

For four young Aboriginal sisters from a remote mission, this is the year that would change their lives forever. The sisters, Cynthia, Gail, Julie and Kay are discovered by Dave (played by BRIDEMAIDS' Chris O' Dowd),  a down-on-his-luck Irish musician with an attitude (but kind heart), very little rhythm but a great encyclopedic knowledge of soul music. Dave steers the girls away from their country & western origins and wants to repackage them as Australia's answer to 'The Supremes.' He then flies them to the war-zones of South Vietnam, where they sing soul classics for the American Marines.  On tour in the Mekong Delta, the girls sing up a storm, dodge bullets…   And fall in love.

Based on a true story (and a mega-successful 2005 stage musical), THE SAPPHIRES is a triumphant celebration of youthful emotion, family and music. Already a box-office smash in native Australia, the features incredible musical numbers that will leave audiences wanting to purchase the soundtrack. In addition, there has already been awards talk surrounding the film. HIFF is honored to open its 32nd edition with this eclectic and rousing comedy drama that honorably represents Pacific Rim cinema!
